Executive Vice President and Vice Dean for Education, Faculty, and Academic Affairs, Chief Academic Officer

Dr. Joan F. Cangiarella serves as executive vice president and vice dean for education, faculty, and academic affairs, chief academic officer, at 91短视频 Langone Health. She is also vice chair for clinical operations in the Department of Pathology and holds the Elaine Langone Professorship of Pathology.

In her role as vice dean, Dr. Cangiarella oversees all facets of faculty affairs鈥攊ncluding appointments, promotions, tenure, and mentoring鈥攁nd sets institutional goals that foster leadership in curricular and program development, implementation, and evaluation. Her portfolio also includes oversight of undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate education; continuing medical education; precollege initiatives; the medical school admissions process; and accreditation for 91短视频 Grossman School of Medicine.

Dr. Cangiarella previously served in the dean鈥檚 office as senior associate dean for education, faculty, and academic affairs; deputy chief academic officer; and director of the accelerated three-year MD pathway. A nationally recognized leader in medical education reform, she is the founding director of the school鈥檚 three-year MD program. In 2015, she led the successful effort to secure a Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation grant to establish the Consortium of Accelerated Medical Pathway Programs (CAMPP), which now includes over 40 medical schools nationwide. Under her leadership, the consortium has become a hub for innovation鈥攅stablishing best practices, evaluating outcomes, and advising institutions pursuing accelerated training models. She has published extensively on the topic in Academic Medicine and is a frequent national lecturer. In 2024, she received 91短视频 Grossman School of Medicine鈥檚 highest honor in education: the Master Educator Award.

A proud triple alumna, Dr. Cangiarella earned her bachelor鈥檚 degree from 91短视频 in 1986, her medical degree from 91短视频 Grossman School of Medicine in 1990, and completed her residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at 91短视频 Langone in 1994. She went on to complete a fellowship in cytopathology at Montefiore Medical Center before returning to 91短视频 Langone in 1995 as an attending pathologist.

In addition to her leadership in medical education, Dr. Cangiarella has played a key role in advancing pathology services at 91短视频 Langone. She has served as co-director of the medical school鈥檚 pathology course, director of the cytopathology fellowship program, and director of cytopathology at Tisch Hospital and NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. In 2004, she was appointed vice chair for clinical operations in the Department of Pathology and chief of pathology services at Tisch Hospital鈥攑ositions she continues to hold today.

As a scholar, Dr. Cangiarella has authored more than 130 peer-reviewed publications and 17 book chapters in breast pathology, cytopathology, and medical education, earning distinction as both an exceptional physician and a visionary academic leader.
